Dodge Data Analytics Provides Insight on BIM and Its Key Success Factors.
Dodge Data and Analytics, leading Construction industry data analysts, released an industry report at the start of Quarter 3 (Q3) 2016 titled, “Measuring the Impact of BIM on Complex Buildings.” The report exemplifies data that has been quantitatively measured to exhibit the key benefits of using Building Information Modeling (BIM) practices. Studies found BIM to improve the outcome in successive stages of construction and boost the project delivery process in its entirety.
Architects, engineers, contractors, and owners were used to measure the data derived in the study, and researchers found that BIM metrics were positive and rated well in regards to the 10 aspects of Planning, Design and Construction. Design, Documentation and Constructionability, Estimating and Bidding, Construction Phasing and Logistics, Contractors Understanding of Design Intent, Cost Control and Reduction, Schedule and Project Documentation, Unplanned Changes/Rework/Out-Of-Sequence Work, and Labor, Safety, and Material Waste all saw improvement across the board when using BIM.
Rated amongst the top five positive impacts of BIM were the following:
- Contractors Rated High/Very High 74% for Improved Constructionability on Final Design.
- Owners Rated High/Very High 73% for Increased Owners’ Understanding of Proposed Design Solutions.
- Engineers Rated High/Very High 71% for Improved Quality/Function of Final Design.
- Owners Rated High/Very High 70% for Generated Better Construction Documents
- Owners Rated High/Very High 70% for Improved Ability to Plan Construction Phasing and Logistics.
Other notable statistics include 85% of participants saw a reduction in the final cost of their complex construction project, with 55% stating a 5% overall cost reduction, and one in ten stating a 10% cost reduction. 87% of owners and contractors reported an increase in labor productivity, with 20% of those respondents reporting an increase of 25% or more. Moreover, 88% saw an acceleration in scheduling, with 68% seeing an increase of over 5% in acceleration, and 23% with an increase of over 10% acceleration.
The quantitative and analytical data derived from BIM practices are helping owners, architects, engineers, and contractors to make key decisions that effectively benefit firms for the short and long term. In conclusion, Dodge Data and Analytics have found BIM to be a key factor in accelerating the growth and capacity of companies in the Construction industry.
