Constructioneering? Yup, This Tech Is Changing the Industry

It’s not just a new buzzword; the term constructioneering is a catchall for streamline construction processes, Cloud-to-Cloud services, and improved project delivery time, among many other new industry features the tech promises to introduce. A joint venture between Topcon Positioning Group, world leaders in positioning instruments for survey and construction, and Bentley Systems, global providers of comprehensive software solutions for advancing infrastructure, the term constructioneering refers to the increased efficiency and productivity engineers can expect to find within their roles of surveying and construction.

Put simply, engineers will no longer have to worry about traditional workflow between design and construction, in which data from surveys and digital engineering models are often at risk of being lost. Instead, Topcon and Bentley have come together to connect their respective Cloud services, MAGNET Enterprise and ProjectWise CONNECT Edition, to improve the overall relationship between design and construction through enhanced integration between their respective cloud services.

Topcon’s  web-based field and office data management system, MAGNET Enterprise, and Bentley’s cloud-based document and model sharing platform, ProjectWise CONNECT Edition, will see one more addition to the partnership: Bentley’s ContextCapture, a reality modeling software. All together, Topcon and Bentley will be able to improve the industry by a large gamut.

Each company boasts bringing market Cloud-based solution offerings through their services to the industry and say they will provide construction with workflows that have thus far been impossible. Bentley Systems will offer its ProjectWise CONNECT Edition users seamless connectivity with MAGNET Enterprise, and Topcon will incorporate ContextCapture image processing for its mass data collection via unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

At first, the company’s Cloud services will be able to bring construction site conditions to the engineers so that their work starts with an accurate model of the current 3D context (as captured by TOPCON UAS photogrammetry and laser scanners). The information is then processed into engineering-ready 3D reality meshes by Bentley’s ContextCapture software. Cloud services accurately convey the engineers’ work directly into construction processes to be completed in the field. The end result? An entirely automated process of direct surveying, design, and construction. (thehindubusinessline.com).

According to Topcon and Bentley Systems, an automated process of that caliber improves project delivery by performing design in context and real-time. It also improves the system by feeding digital engineering models to the 3D machine controls that guide the construction machinery.

CEO and President of Topcon Positioning Group, Ray O’Connor, spoke candidly about the partnership with Bentley Systems and his thoughts on the hot-topic word, constructioneering,

“Topcon and Bentley share a vision about the advancements we can achieve through what I call the continuous representation of reality. We also share a commitment to rolling up our sleeves and working together to make possible tangible results and real benefits for our customers as we advance constructioneering. I believe that our strategic collaboration will continue to integrate surveying, engineering, and construction, improving outcomes for project delivery.”

Bentley Systems CEO, Greg Bentley, shared similar sentiments, confirming that together, Topcon and Bentley Systems are striving to unify surveying, engineering, and construction industries, all things that up until now, have been mutually exclusive of one another.

In closing, it seems as though Bentley and O’Connor’s newly invented term constructioneering is precisely as they say it is: an innovative new process that allows engineers to start from the reality-captured survey context to leverage and update digital engineering models through the construction process. Their next goal? To mainstream constructioneering for infrastructure projects around the world.
